Giving "Your Baby Can Read" a try

My 3 year old son started to learn his letters and numbers at 10months and he was able to retain his new found knowledge. He can sing his ABCs and also count to around 30. Not bad for a 3 year old! I've been seeing the "Your Baby Can Read" product advertised on his favorite channel: Sprout. In the commercial they show kids his age reading simple words off a card and they claim its from watching their videos. I recently put my order in for a 30 day trial of the product. Here's what they're going to send me:

  • (5) DVD Set with Sliding Word Cards
  • (50) Word Game Cards
  • (82) Double Sided Word Cards
  • (5) Lift-A-Flap Books
  • Window Book, Workshop DVD and Music CD

According to studies, the best time to start your child with written and spoken word is during their infant and toddler years. During this time your child's brain is creating thousands of synapses that allows them to simultaneously learn written and spoken word - pretty much their brains are sponges and will soak up anything they see and hear.

The natural window for learning is from birth to about the age of four. During these years it's easier for your child to learn any type of language including spoken, foreign and written. The earlier you start teaching your child to read, the more likely they'll enjoy it.

Here is a quote from a recent study:

Studies prove that the earlier a child learns to read, the better they perform in school and later in life. Early readers have more self-esteem and are more likely to stay in school. Meanwhile, a national panel of reading specialists and educators determined that most of the nation’s reading problems could be eliminated if children began reading earlier.

So hopefully I will receive my "Your Baby Can Read" package soon. I'll post an update after trying it out.

UPDATE: It arrived!! :) I got my "Your Baby Can Read" package, here's a couple of pictures:
